As discussed in GoHire post, a lesson learned from GoHire was to solve a unique problem if you want to create a great product and after thorough analysis we zeroed in on the lack of employee referrals within the restaurant industry. Time and time again, we heard that referrals provided the best opportunities and employees and we decided to build HotSchedules Recruit in order to streamline the referral process. I led a team of developers, designers, and quality assurance analysts in building HotSchedules Recruit iOS, Android, and web applications.
Numerous lessons were learning but the benefits of a lean product development process is the one that sticks with me the most. They sky was the limit in the beginning and there were so many potential ideas and features we could target that choosing what to do was a daunting task. Luckily, I was reading The Lean Startup during this project and was able to apply the learnings from the book. Without a doubt, our most successful features were those that started out small, were thoroughly user tested, and had ample evidence of their purpose. If I could do it over again, I would have applied this model to even more features than I did. I am thankful HotSchedules Recruit provided me the opportunity to see the results of employing a lean approach to building a product and I look forward to using this approach on the next product I build.
